Eureka Dunes Dry Camp

Camp Review

  • At Eureka Dunes, an open parking area serves as the campground. A few established camping spots have a bench and fire pit, but most other “spots” are just open areas.

  • There is no camp host, but at least for the night we were there, everyone was quiet and kept to themselves.

  • There was a bathroom at the campground and while it was a pit toilet, it wasn’t super disgusting.

  • The night we spent was a windy one—with no trees or rocks to speak of, there was nowhere to hide.

  • Because there are no facilities (including lights), we had a great time watching the stars until we were tired.

What Happened?

We camped at Eureka Dunes for our night in Death Valley and felt lucky that we got to spend a night (for free) next to an amazing hike. There was plenty of space and we felt like we had more than enough room to breathe and just be. Because the other campers were so far away, we took our shower out in the open. When we went to bed, we felt as clean as we could be. Thank god for the shower—as without it, we would have had sand all over our bed. And as everyone knows, sand is “coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.”

When we woke up, we marveled at the winds, which had died down a little during the night, but was picking up again with renewed vigor. Not wanting more sand on us, we quickly packed up and drove towards our next destination.
