Granite Pass

Camp Review:

  • I found a great dispersed camping spot near Hidden Hills Road off of Kelbaker Road.

  • This spot was amazing due to how big it is (there was already one car and RV here and would have fit another 4-5 cars).

  • In the distance, I could make out Highway 40. And due to that, I had internet (5G on T-Mobile).

  • There was some dog poop, but I cleaned it up with a shovel.

  • Other than some really faint highway noise (really hard to make out), it was quiet. The loudest thing was the gentle wind dancing with my tent.

  • It was also pretty cold, but my Mr Heater Little Buddy made the tent rather cozy in no time.

What I Learned:

  • I had no leg issues/pain even though I drove for about 7 hours today.

What Happened?

My goal was to drive the Mojave Road, but since it takes an entire day to drive there, I figured that I’d drive to Kelso Dunes, and get to the start of the road on day 2.

The drive itself was pretty boring, but with a good book and some good tunes on the way, it wasn’t too bad. In total, I drove about 8 hours (including lunch, refuel, and restroom breaks) from 7:30am till 3:45pm.

Once I got to Kelso Dunes, I drove past the main parking lot and got to the campsites. I would have stayed the night there, but it was so windy, that after the failed attempt to hike to the top of Kelso Dunes, I left and found a dispersed camping spot on Hidden Hills Road, near Kelbaker Road.
