Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

Hike Review:

  • We hiked the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

  • We located the highest point in the sand dunes and hiked to the top.

  • We tried not to repeat any of the hike, so we ended up hiking a twisted loop of sorts.

  • There were tons of people near the parking lot, but thinned out dramatically. Near the peak, there were less than half a dozen people.

  • It was really soft sand the whole way through, so much so that Jo hiked barefoot the whole time.

Friend:

  • Jo hiked to the top of the sand dunes with me. It was really nice sharing peak with a friend.

What Happened?

2.2 miles, 1 hr 22 mins, 410 ft of ascent

We drove to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes as it’s the only sand dunes that we could reach with our cars, given the road closures at Death Valley National Park (due to flash floods that occurred a few months ago).

We parked our cars and basically started off by making a straight line towards the high point in the sand dunes. At first, the dunes were quite short, so it wasn’t too bad going up and down these sand dunes, but past the half way point, the sand dunes got pretty tall, so we ended up walking the ridgeline of these massive dunes towards the highpoint.

As we got to the top, the grand views came into sight and we rested at the peak taking it all in. I then meditated for a few minutes and really enjoyed practicing mindfulness and enjoying the present. We then hiked back to our cars at a relaxed pace.
