Sentinel Cave
Hike Review
We hiked from the Upper Sentinel Cave entrance to the Lower Sentinel Cave entrance.
We found the cave easy and it was a good introduction to caving.
The floor was mostly level, though there were loose rocks, making footing a bit tricky.
The ceilings were tall, which was nice since even I at 6’ did not need to stoop.
There was one caved-in section which provided a “window” to the outside world.
The cave was very straightforward with no forking paths, which meant it was impossible to get lost.
The cave was, however, long with it being 1 km.
What Happened?
Our first stop at Lava Beds National Monument (after getting our caving permit) was a visit to Sentinel Cave, which was advertised as one of the easiest caves in the monument. And it really was—with its high ceilings, mostly flat floors, and non-branching cave system, this was basically a walk in the dark.
When we got to the Lower Sentinel Cave entrance, we exited the cave and walked back on the surface back to Ramona.
