Camp Review:

  • I found this site on the iOverlander app.

  • The exact GPS location was N 34°9.379', W 118°41.977' on Las Virgenes Road.

  • The parking spot had lots of leaves, but only had a few pieces of trash. There was no privacy, but at the same time, there weren’t many windows overlooking it.

What I Learned

  • This was my first time camping on an urban street, so I was scared that there would be a knock on the door by someone unhappy. Of course, nothing like that happened. Even though I was a bit nervous and apprehensive, I got pretty good sleep.

  • Because the parking spot was on the side of a road with cars going 45+ MPH, whenever a car went by at a fast speed, I would be woken for a second before I fell back asleep.

  • Right before we fell asleep, we heard a cacophony of sounds like 50 different dogs barking in a symphony. It ended after about 30 seconds, but it was one of the weirdest noises that I have ever heard (Cassie had also never heard sounds like that before).

What Happened?

We had booked a camping spot at Malibu Creek State Park, but when we arrived, we found that the gate was closed after 10 pm, which meant that we did not have access to our camping spot. After a 5+ hour drive, this was pretty demoralizing.

After taking a breath, I opened up the iOverlander app and found a spot that was marked as open with reviews going back just a few months on iOverlander. It took less than 10 minutes to get there and with a lack of choice, we parked, popped up the camper, brushed our teeth, and went to bed.

Besides the extra city noise, we found our sleep to be deeper than expected and woke up feeling a bit refreshed. We headed off to a cafe for some morning tea and digital errands.
