Oceano Dunes SVRA

Car

Camp Review:

  • Oceano Dunes off-road camping was a great way of experiencing sand dune camping without having to go to the Sahara desert.

  • I didn’t see much trash out in the dunes, which was great to see.

  • You get to camp wherever, so I chose to drive into and camp in the dunes, while everyone else seemed to want to camp near the beach.

What I Learned:

  • Due to a species of protected birds, you’re not allowed to fly your done at Oceano Dunes.

Fears Overcome:

  • Getting the car stuck in sand--driving here by myself gave me tons of confidence and I got to find out what I could drive on (almost everything) and what I couldn’t (steep inclines on loose sand). If I really needed more traction, I reserved the option of dropping the tire pressure below 20psi, but never had to do that.

What Happened?

I heard that Oceano Dunes might be closed for off-roading in the next few years, so back in October, I booked the first open Friday that air could see.

When I got down to Oceano Dunes, I air downed my tires to 20psi, and enjoyed the beautiful sunset with tons of not-biting insects. I then explored the dunes and found a remote spot almost at the southern most point of the park. I was full from a late lunch, so I just setup my tent, took some pictures of the stars, and went to bed.

The next day, I woke up before sunset, packed up, then slowly drove back to the entrance, where I aired up my tires and drove back home.
