Redinger Lake
On the drive in, things looked bad. With about 10 miles to go, it started raining. The roads were slick and the dark clouds in front of us seemed to be telling us to turn back. Luckily, with a mile to go, the rains stopped, but that was about the extent of our luck. The weather forecast had stated that the winds would die down to less than 5mph for the evening and night, but we had sustained winds of about 10mph, with gusts that easily reached double that at various times during the night.
The next morning, it was cold and still windy, but the skies were blue, so we hoped that the sun would warm us up. Unfortunately, the dark clouds rolled in, it stayed cold, and the winds kept up the barrage. Our plan that day was to packraft on the lake, but with it being so windy, we abandoned those plans and decided to return home empty handed.
Somehow though, with about 10 minutes before I finished packing up, the winds just stopped—died down completely.
We felt so lucky as we headed off to the boat ramp.
What I Learned:
At the bottom of a canyon, you can’t trust the weather report’s wind numbers. When it was forecasted to be 3mph, it was 10mph. When it was supposed to be 7mph, it was zero.
At a windy campsite, I should drive around the entire campground to figure out which spots have the least wind.
On a windy day, I really should turn the car around such that the front of the car faces the wind. This way, the cooking and eating area at the back of the truck would be protected from the wind.
I apparently snore a lot at night.
Camp Review:
The campsite is a big dirt lot with three clean bathrooms and a few trees.
There are plenty of other campsites on the road next to the lake—an occupied one even had its own little trail down to the lake.
The bathrooms were the vault variety, but were the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen in my life.
A quarter mile down the road is a boat launch, which also has two bathrooms (this one was decently clean, but it had a few flies).
The road to get here is a single lane paved road that has seen better days. Still, not many people travel it, so it wasn’t too bad to drive.
There’s no service for T-Mobile, but AT&T had two strong bars on LTE.
