Sweetwater Spring Trailhead

Car

Camp Review:

  • After checking out several campgrounds and pull offs near Laguna Mountain, Steve and I settled on this trailhead for our camping spot.

  • The trailhead is situated right next to Coalinga Road, so the noise from the car woke us up a few times during the night. I thought the Coalinga Road would be a quiet road, but I was surprised by the amount of traffic on the road.

  • The trailhead parking lot was almost perfectly level, which was a welcome surprise.

  • The trailhead bathroom was surprisingly clean and well stocked.

  • There was no cell signal on all providers.

What I Learned

  • I slept really well throughout the night, only waking up twice. However, Steve said that he woke up multiple times throughout the night, as he woke up whenever I moved in my sleep or a car drove by.

  • The campsite was surprisingly warm, especially since most of the parking was situated for sunshine in the morning.

Friends

  • Steve shared the camper with me. It was great as having two bodies in the camper... probably kept the car camper much warmer. More importantly, it was just so much more fun with a great guy like Steve.

What Happened?

We left the bay area by around 5:30pm and headed off to Laguna Mountain. Unfortunately, several of the spots we had picked out for camping were either full or unreachable (due to muddy conditions on the road). So, we settled for sleeping at the Sweetwater Spring Trailhead.

We parked, cooked ourselves dinner, and traded stories until going to sleep at around 11pm. Actually, about dinner, I accidentally skipped the commercial section of Hollister, which meant that we couldn’t buy dinner even if we wanted, as there are no restaurants on Highway 25 south of Hollister. So, I ate what I had packed for breakfast—baby naan, cheese, eggs, and salami. It turned out to be a perfect dinner and it smelled so good Steve even had a few bites.

In the morning, we didn’t set an alarm (intentionally) and woke up around 8am. We quickly got dressed for a crisp morning, and headed off to find some turkey!
