Whitney Portal Trailhead

Camp Review:

  • I camped at the Whitney Portal Trailhead in anticipation of my 2AM start time for my attempt up Mount Whitney.

  • I say “I camped,” but really, I slept in a parking lot, specifically, the overflow lot, as I didn’t want to take up a spot in the trailhead camping lot, where there are spots for tents (and I didn’t need that).

  • There were no bugs to speak of.

  • Because I was downwind from the bathroom, but once I closed up the windows, I didn’t smell anything.

  • The site had a white noise, which was the Lone Pine Creek snaking along next to the campground.

What Happened?

I had a permit to hike up to Mount Whitney on July 25, so I camped at the Whitney Portal Trailhead. I was aiming for a 2AM start time, which necessitated a sleep at the trailhead.

I cleaned up and had an early dinner, and retired to my bed early, where I entertained myself with things until I fell asleep. I slept better than I thought, only waking up a few times worried that I had slept past my alarm. The next day, I woke up with a start, and headed up to Mount Whitney.

The last picture below is of Hot Creek, where I thought about sleeping the next night, but there were too many people for me to want to sleep there.
