Coyote Creek Trail and McKean Road Loop

Trail Review:

  • I rode an improvised bike loop by riding on Branham Rd, Monterey Rd, Coyote Creek Trail, Bailey Ave, McKean Rd, and Los Alamitos Creek Trail.

  • Branham and Monterey were busy roads, but with a wide bike lane that made me feel relatively safe. Even with that though, I had a close call near the on-ramp on Monterey Rd that leads to Blossom Hill Rd as a car cut in front of me with less than 2 feet of clearance.

  • Coyote Creek and Los Alamitos Creek Trails are fantastic multi-use trails with a well-paved trail and a decent amount of shade. Coyote Creek Trail was pretty empty with just a few other cyclists, while Los Alamitos Creek Trail was also pretty empty except for a few people walking.

  • Bailey and McKean Roads were iffy as there was a small or no bike lanes, with cars that were driving at high speeds. Still, everyone that passed me gave me a wide berth, which I really appreciated.

  • I road this loop in the afternoon, but the high was in the low 70s, so I thought the weather was just about perfect.

What Happened?

26.4 miles, 2 hr 23 mins, 530 ft of ascent

I hadn’t gone bike riding in a while, so I decided to go bike around in a loop so that I would ride the Coyote Creek Trail and McKean Road. I was looking forward to reviving some memories of the Coyote Creek Trail, which I hadn’t ridden in a dozen or so years, and McKean Road, which I thought would give me the best views of nature on this loop.

The ride was mostly uneventful (except for the close call on Monterey Rd) and just a damn good ride on a beautiful day.
