Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve

After we found parking in the overflow lot, we started our hike towards Little Yosemite. But before we got there, we first stopped by the Alameda Creek to check out the water and look around at some wildlife. The creek runs next to the trail and is actually the runoff from Little Yosemite.

We then started the hike in earnest and steadily climbed our way to our destination. The hike was pretty easy and we were in jovial spirits as we caught up with each other.

When we got to Little Yosemite, we were able to grab a choice spot on top of giant boulders to lounge and snack. While Andi stayed with the kids, Mike and I were able to get closer to the water to take more photos.

After hanging out for a while, we started heading back to the car. But, instead of coming the way we had come, we decided to take the high road and take a trail that snaked alongside the hills.

The views on this higher elevation were worth the extra effort, and we enjoyed the awesome views of the valley below us.

With about a mile to go, we witnessed a hilarious struggle between these cows and this Indian family. They had strayed a bit close to the brown cow you see above, who took umbrage with that fact and charged at them. At this aggressive action, the daughter of the family dropped her bag and ran towards the main trail. The father then tried various ways to get the bag back, but the cow kept charging at him whenever he got too close. We stopped watching after 5 minutes, but we really hope that he was able to get the bag back for his daughter!

This was a wonderful hike. One part wonderful because of the trail and the beautiful foliage, another part due to the amazing company.

What I Learned:

  • Little Yosemite gets packed, so starting early is key.

  • I need to carry my tripod if I want to get really good photos of the flowing water.

  • I really enjoy hiking narrow shelf trails.

Hike Review:

  • Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve is a beautiful place, especially in the spring.

  • Although the hike is easy for me, it was a little difficult for the kids due to the narrow shelf trails and the sudden elevation gain from Little Yosemite to the upper trail.
