Santa Teresa County Park—Night Hike

Hike Review

What I Learned

  • Electrical towers, which I usually find to be as unattractive as a fly floating in my mug of hot chocolate, looked surprisingly handsome in the night. I suppose attractiveness is a matter of perspective.

  • We stopped at a random part of the trail to count the number of planes in the sky. We counted eight, which was four more than I had guessed. There are just so many planes in the San Jose sky—probably due to the presence of an international airport.

What Happened?

2.5 miles, 1 hr 17 mins, 719 ft of ascent

It had been a while since we had gone on a night hike, so we put our headlamps in our pockets and headed off to Santa Teresa County Park. We were initially planning on hiking Coyote Peak, but as we drove past the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch entrance, we decided to hike Bernal Hill instead.

The hike up was steep, but welcome as the cool night air was the perfect counterbalance to our increasing heart rates. We enjoyed the views of the San Jose skyline and the stars while we hiked the deserted park. It was a great way to spend a weeknight.
